September—Back to School!
Hi Everyone!
I have changed my blog to once a month as I am truly trying to avoid too much computer time. One thing I have done lately for my own health, is reduce electromagnetic waves. We are uncertain about all of the facts of EMF’s and the effect on our health and I don’t claim to have all of the answers but I do know, in my personal experience, being on the computer for extended amounts of time affects me in ways such as eye strain, fatigue, low mood and reduced motivation.
I think this is something to really consider with our youth today. And since today my topic is about getting back to school, it goes hand in hand. I will be gearing my specialized services on the link between food and the emotional and mental health toward our youth from conception to college and today is just the beginning. I have found in my practice that heading off problems before they develop, by educating the young mother, and the kids as they grow will be much more efficient and the impact on the world much more profound ---which in essence is my mission.
Our youth are almost constantly on some kind of device either texting, on facebook, tweeting or instagramming! The list goes on. The schools are promoting more computer use and even introducing such programs as ‘Bring Your Own Device’ in the classroom. I think as we get into the new school year, we need to try to remind our kids (especially the teens ---and I am a parent of one!) that they need to try to balance their device time, and remember the importance of other activities such as reading from an actual book, writing, drawing, painting, and definitely outdoor activities. Taking time to be creative quietly without outside stimulation feeds the brain and calms the nervous system, and a balanced nervous system makes for a happy human, young or old. Time alone with reflection in this way is imperative to a child and teens mental and emotional health, helping them reconnect to their core and their purpose and who they really are and want to be despite outside influences. It helps them (and us) to remember what is truly important because the noise and constant stimuli is silenced, allowing our inner resources to shine through.
Being outside in nature also is imperative for mental and emotional health for both us and our children. The energies of nature will actually penetrate our systems, calming us and giving us clarity. Have you ever encountered a child growing up on a farm and felt how emotionally stable and grounded they seem, all dirty, happy and stress free?! Encourage your children to spend time in nature, and go with them! It’s rejuvenating! Activities such as mountain biking, cross country skiing, hiking, kayaking, canoeing or swimming in a river can be activities that will be both enjoyable and physically challenging. This will fulfill two purposes in one, as your system is always served mentally, emotionally and physically by exercise on top of the grounding experience of being in nature! Another added benefit that I’m sure I’ve written about before is the sunlight giving us the Vitamin D necessary for so much of our biochemical balance. Nature knows what we need, and it’s not walking around being attached to a device that is emitting constant EMF’s. Please take this into consideration when the kids head back to school, and their computer time is increased with the school workload.
Next month I will be suggesting some ideas to keep the kids eating in ways that will support their brain and their emotional health during the stresses of that inevitably come with the school year.
See you then!
